About Starlink

The Starlink constellation, operated by SpaceX, allows 47 countries to connect to the internet via satellite. It also intends to provide worldwide mobile phone service after 2023. SpaceX began launching Starlink satellites in 2019. Starlink, which will be in low Earth orbit (LEO) by December 2022, is made up of around 3,300 mass-produced small satellites that communicate with specialized ground transceivers. A total of 12,000 satellites will be deployed, with a possible increase to 42,000 later on. SpaceX forecasted a million users by December 2022.

In May 2018, SpaceX stated that the ten-year endeavor to develop, build, and deploy the constellation will cost at least $10 billion. While sales from its rocket business were expected to reach $5 billion in the same year, SpaceX expects income from its satellite network to exceed $30 billion by 2025.

Concerns have been expressed by astronomers regarding the impact of the constellation on ground-based astronomy and how the satellites would contribute to an already crowded orbital environment. SpaceX has sought to alleviate astronomical worries by upgrading Starlink satellites to reduce their brightness while in operation. Furthermore, the satellites are intended to prevent collisions on their own using uplinked tracking data.

Brief History of Starlink

In the middle of the 1980s, the Strategic Defense Initiative envisaged constellations of low Earth orbit satellites, which culminated in Brilliant Pebbles, which required staging weapons in space for fast ballistic missile interceptions. Recognizing the potential for low-latency communication, many commercial mega constellations employing around 100 satellites, such as Celestron, Teledesic, Iridium, and Globalstar, were formed in the 1990s as a consequence of development offshoots. However, by the time the dot-com bubble broke, all firms had declared bankruptcy, owing in part to the exorbitant launch costs at the time.

Larry Williams, vice president of strategic relations at SpaceX and a former vice president of Teledesic’s “Internet in the Sky” venture, launched the SpaceX Washington DC office in 2004. In June of that year, as part of a “shared strategic strategy,” SpaceX purchased a stake in Surrey Satellite Technology (SSTL). SSTL was working on expanding the Internet into space at the time. However, after shifting its focus to navigation and Earth observation, SpaceX sold its stake back to EADS Astrium in 2008.

Early in 2014, Elon Musk and Greg Wyler were reportedly working on ideas for WorldVu, a satellite constellation with 700 or more units that would be more than ten times larger than the largest Iridium satellite network at the time. However, these talks broke through in June 2014, and SpaceX instead applied to the STEAM ITU through the Norwegian telecom regulator. SpaceX confirmed to the relationship in its 2016 application to the Federal Communications Commission for Starlink license (FCC). SpaceX registered a trademark in the United States for its satellite broadband network, Starlink, named after the novel The Fault in Our Stars.
