The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) is the national health protection institute tasked with leading infectious disease outbreaks and health-related emergency preparedness, detection, and response.
The first formal step toward establishing the NCDC occurred in 2011, when the Epidemiology Division, the Avian Influenza Project and its laboratories, and the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (NFELTP) were relocated to form the agency’s nucleus. President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Bill for an Act to Establish NCDC into law in November 2018.

The NCDC employs over 500 people and is led by the Director General. At the national level, this includes personnel working at three locations: the Headquarters and National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja, as well as the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL) in Lagos State, which is a branch of the NRL. State Surveillance Officers are stationed in each of the federation’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Primary Function
- Prevent, detect, and control diseases of public concern.
- Coordination of surveillance systems for the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data on diseases of public health significance.
- Assist states in trying to respond to small outbreaks and take the lead in responding to large infectious diseases.
- Create and keep a network of references and specialized laboratories.
- To inform policy, conduct, collect, synthesize, and disseminate global health research.
- Lead Nigeria’s international engagement on diseases of importance to public health.
General requirements for NDDC recruitment
- Must be a Nigerian citizen between the ages of 20 and 45.
- Sc. or HND in any medical or biological discipline.
- Candidates must be medically fit and have a valid NYSC Discharge certificate.
