ABOUT CAPTAIN ELECHI AMADI POLYTECHNIC
In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, a polytechnic supported by the Rivers State Government is called Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic (formerly known as Rivers State School of Basic Studies, Rivers State College of Arts and Science, and subsequently Port Harcourt Polytechnic).
On July 4, 2016, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON, the governor of Rivers State, signed the Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill into law, renaming the institution from Port Harcourt Polytechnic to Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic. The Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic Law presently consists of all the provisions of the aforementioned Law.
The Rivers State School of Basic Studies was founded on April 19, 1984, when Police Commissioner Fidelis Oyakhilome, the state’s military ruler, issued the proclamation creating it. When the school began operating as a tertiary institution connected to the University of Ibadan in November 1987, the decree went into force. The Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria later became connected with it for pre-degree IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) courses.
The institution was reorganized in 1999 under the name Rivers State College of Arts and Science with the goal of providing courses leading to diplomas and certificates in a variety of fields in addition to school diplomas and IJMB. The college comprised three schools: the Institute of Continuing Education, the Schools of Arts, Science, and Preliminary Studies.
RIVCAS was given approval by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to conduct programs leading to the National Diploma in 2006. (ND). RIVCAS subsequently evolved into a polytechnic supported by the Rivers State government and managed by the NBTE. A bill renaming the Rivers State College of Arts and Science to Port Harcourt Polytechnic was approved by the Rivers State House of Assembly in June 2016. On July 4, 2016, Chief (Barrister) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON, the governor of Rivers State, ratified the Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill. The Elechi Amadi Polytechnic is governed by the Port Harcourt Polytechnic Law 2016.
